Biotechnology is an interface of basic and applied science, where gradual and subtle transformation of science into technology can be witnessed. Biotechnology is defined as the application of scientific and engineering principals to the processing of material by biological agents to provide goods and services. Biotechnology comprise a numbers of technologies based upon increasing understanding of biology at the cellular and molecular level. A wide variety of microorganisms are now being employed as tools in biotechnology to produce useful products or services. Raw materials can be converted to useful finished products both by ordinary chemical processes and by biological means. Generally, the costs of chemical conversion are quite high as the reactions require high temperature or pressure. In contrast, biological alternatives, using microbes or cultured animal or plant cells, operate at physiologically normal conditions of temperature, pressure, pH etc. During the next few decades biotechnology would have overtaken chemical technology, and many such chemicals which are today produced chemically would be made through biotechnology. The application of biotechnology include the production of gasoline from ethanol which in turn is produced from sugar, the production of insulin, the production of hepatitis B vaccine using recombinant DNA technology and the extraction of copper using mineral leaching bacteria. So, this course will make students capable of exploiting enough available opportunities to nourish their skills in emerging biotechnology industry and research . The course shall be spread over two academic years (M.Sc. Part-I and Part-II). Each part shall consist of two semesters.
Eligibility Criteria :
1.The candidate who have passed the Bachelor’s degree in science with subjects in the faculty of Life science/ Biological/Medical/ Engineering/ Food/Agriculture and those candidates who have passed the Bachelor’s degree in science with any three of the following subjects i. e. Mathematics/statistics/, Physics and Chemistry are also eligible for admission in semester-I.
2.The candidates should have obtained a minimum aggregate of 50% marks (including optional subjects) in the qualifying examination of all course. The candidates who are awarded grades shall be required to produce conversion formula for converting the grade into percentage of marks.

Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make products, or any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives to make or modify products or processes for specific use. It is the technology based on biology, cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help to improve our lives and the health of our planet. A lot of significant developments in biotechnology sector have witnessed emerging trends in Biopharma, Agriculture, Environmental and medical biotechnology for the development of society. The application of biotechnology includes plant tissue culture, production of transgenic animals and plants, applications in medicine as tools and therapeutics, creation of new enzymes and their immobilization for industrial use, development of monoclonal antibodies and control of pollution. According to the analysis of Indian Biotechnology industry expected to reach Rs. 4, 40,000 crore in 2020. So for growth trained and skilled manpower is required. To fulfill the need of industry, research and development Sector College is successfully running under graduate course B.Sc. (Hons) Biotechnology. The course shall be spread over three academic years (BSc. Part l,II and III) and six semesters. Each part shall consist of two semesters.
Eligibility Criteria:
The students who have passed +2 examinations from a statutory University/ Board or any other examination equivalent science stream (Medical/Non Medical) with 45% marks are eligible for the admission.

Departments
Biotechnology
About the Department
The Department of Biotechnology offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes. B.Sc. Biotechnology was started in 2003 followed by M.Sc. Biotechnology in 2006. Later on, these programmes were upgraded to Honours. The present curriculum follows flexible and Choice Based Credit approach.
Vision
Our vision is to make students acquire skills to become globally competent in the field of Biotechnology. Our focus is on key understanding of advanced practical and research skills to facilitate budding biotechnologist to excel in the field of Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. We endeavour to make our students employable and relevant to society.
Facilities
The focus of the Department is to provide excellent environment and State of Art infrastructure to the students to encourage them to excel both in academics and research. Department is covered under Star College Scheme of DBT (Department of Biotechnology), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, which has further helped to strengthen hands-on-training of the students. The current area of research and teaching in the department includes diverse aspects of Biotechnology from basics of Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, applied concept in Tissue Culture, Genomics, Metagenomics, Bioprocess Technology and Environment Biotechnology. The Department has various specialized laboratories such as Fermentation, Environment, Tissue Culture and Molecular Biology. The laboratories are equipped with instruments for basic and advanced research including microscopes, colorimeter, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Vertical and Horizontal Electrophoresis unit, Laminar Air Flow, Flame photometer, Western Blotter ,Thermal cycler, Microplate reader, HPLC, Fermentor, Gel documentation system, High speed centrifuge, Deep freezers (-20°C), Cooling centrifuge, stationary and shaking incubators.
Clubs and societies
The department has formulated a ‘Biotech Society’ for benefit of the students. It organizes various co-curricular events like guest lectures, seminars, trainings, trips, etc. These events are successfully organised by co-operative efforts of teachers and students. Other than complementing academic learning, it also helps to refine leadership, management and decision making skills of the students. Students of the department also actively participate in NCC and NSS wings of the college.
Activities of the Department
For the holistic development of the students various co-curricular activities are organized periodically in the Department such as quiz, debate, poster presentation and PowerPoint presentations. The Department also organizes guest lectures by inviting the eminent speakers from time to time. It helps to expand students’ knowledge horizons. Students are encouraged to undertake interdisciplinary research both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Special academic trainings are organized for students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. by the department. It equips them to pursue higher studies from leading institutes.
Activities are even extended beyond the campus premises as the Faculty along with the students organizes outreach activities such as Water Testing Camps in nearby villages to check water quality. Such activities help to develop a sense of social responsibility in students. To provide wider exposure, student’s visits to renowned Institutes and Industries are undertaken. Students are encouraged to participate in conferences, seminars and summer internship programmes. All these activities have helped our Alumni to perform exceptionally well as teachers and scientists at various laboratories in India and abroad.
Research and Publications
Faculty actively participates in training programmes, conferences, seminars and Research. The Research findings of faculty are published in reputed journals. Faculty is also engaged in guiding PhD students in the capacity of supervisors and co-supervisors.
