About the Department
The Department of Botany, Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib was established in 1959 with the undergraduate course of B.Sc. Medical, which is successfully undergoing till date. In 2014, Mata Gujri College took the lead to introduce B.Sc Botany (Hons.) course in the region, only after Delhi University, Delhi, and Panjab University, Chandigarh. In.In 2016, a postgraduate course of M. Sc. Botany was introduced with the options of dissertation and specialization in 2 subjects,i.e. Crop Genetics & Plant Breeding; and Plant Pathology. Syllabi for both undergraduate and postgraduate course are designed strictly as per the pattern of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Various skill enhancement courses are included in the curriculum to develop subject related skills among the students. Research Projects have been added to the syllabus as a mandatory part for both undergraduate and postgraduate classes. Department is covered under DBT Star College Scheme, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.
The department is proud in the sense that most of its students are well settled in India and abroad and are serving society at different levels. Many of the students of this department have chosen teaching and research as their career and are serving in various Research Institutes and Colleges.

Botany, the study of plant life, an integral part of Biology, aims to understand the behavior, structure, and evolution of plants, using a wide range of approaches, from genes to molecular and cellular biology, through physiological processes and anatomy, to whole plants, populations, and their ecology
Botany as a subject is related to the study of plants. When planning a career in Botany, the job profile can include the study of plants, research, working with industries, teaching, self-employment, and being a part of many more fields. Students of Botany have a great promising career in fields like Forest departments, Horticulture, Pollution control board, Floriculture and Landscaping, Environment, Nursery and gardening, Agriculture, and Mushroom Culture technology. Botany is the best subject option for the aspirants of prestigious posts such as Indian Forest Services (IFS) and Indian Administrative Services (IAS).

Department focuses on providing quality education to the students. Our mission is to strive for an excellent environment in terms of teaching, learning cum researches in Botany / Plant sciences, and produce graduates and postgraduates equipped with skills necessary to fulfill their role in contemporary society. The main aim is to pursue a mantra of holistic development of the students, inculcating scientific temper and providing an enriched academic environment that promotes intellectual curiosity leading to the thirst for scientific knowledge, ensuring practical and analytical approach. Our vision is to maintain our position as the premier department of higher learning and research in Botany/ plant sciences and to further commit ourselves to academic excellence.
Facilities:
Labs
Department is having well-equipped labs such as a Phytochemical lab, Molecular lab, and Cytological lab with various types of equipment, viz. Double Beam Spectrophotometer, Gel Documentation System, Rotary Evaporator, Deep Freezer, Lypholizer, Lecia Microphotography unit, Thermal cycler, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Laminar Air Flow, and many more equipment(s).
Botanical Garden & Herbal garden
Botanical garden housing various types of plants is established in the college to give firsthand knowledge about various types of plants likes gymnosperms, ornamental plants, different types of cactus, and hydrophytes. An extension of the botanical garden is present in the form of an herbal garden which encloses various herbal and medicinal and economical important plants.
Poly house and Shade net House
Well established polyhouse and shade net house are maintained in the college to provide control conditions of temperature and moisture to the plants.
Field for Research Trails
College is having a field for research trials, where students maintain their research trials for their project and dissertation work.
Museum
The museum is being maintained by the department where in different kinds of plant specimens of Insectivorous plants, hydrophytes, lichens, specimens of plant pathology gymnosperms specimens, and modification of root, stem and leaves are included.
Herbarium
Herbarium is maintained by the department with proper documentation of the plants. Plants for herbarium have been collected from the various localities of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttrakhand. Presently, Herbarium has about 700 accessions of angiosperm plants, which are arranged according to the Bentham and Hooker System of Classification.
Photo gallery
A photo gallery is maintained in the department which includes photographs of eminent, scientists in the field of Botany. World’s most expensive plants, pollution indicator plants, Carnivorous plants and photographs of plants showing symptoms of various diseases have also been included in the photogalary.
Central Instrumentation lab
Well-equipped central instrument labs is maintained by the college, where staff and students of the department of Botany, Zoology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Agriculture and Physics perform research work.
Departmental Library
The library is being maintained at a departmental level which includes about 150 books of the subject.
Alumni Association
An active Alumni association is maintained by the department in an attempt to bring all Alumni of the department under one roof. Since the inception of department, a large number of students have obtained their degrees in B. Sc. Medical, B.Sc.(Hons.) Botany and M.Sc. Botany courses. The department is proud in the sense that most of its students are well settled in India and abroad and are serving society at different levels. Many of the students of this department have chosen teaching and research as their career and are serving in various Universities, Research Institutes, and Colleges. This association has helped in igniting the belongingness we have with the Botany Department and will also be doing the same in the future.
Clubs/ Societies:
Botanical and Environmental association is formed by the department, which organizes various kinds of Competitions related to environment. The main motive of the association is to inculcate Environmental awareness among youth in particular and society at large for which various awareness rallies, Seminars and plantation drives are organized from time to time.
Activities of the Department:
Along with the Curricular aspects, the department also focuses on extracurricular and co-curricular activities for the holistic development of the students, which are as follows
- Various guest lectures are organized by the Department to enhance the knowledge of students on various aspects of the subject.
- Botanical Excursions are organized from time to time to give firsthand knowledge about plants to the students.
- Various Competitions such as Poster making, Debate, Declamation, and Quiz are also organized by the Department of Botany to instill confidence among the students.
- Plantation drives are organized by the department as a step towards environmental conservation.
- Various national level seminars, conferences, and workshops are organized by the department from time to time for acquainting the students with the latest development in the subject.
- Seminars, tutorials, and presentations are included as the mandatory part of the syllabus for both undergraduate and postgraduate students to shatter their stage fare and transform them into confident individuals.
- Awareness rallies are organized by the Department in collaboration with the Environment Association to spread awareness regarding various environmental issues.
Research and Publications:
The department has profoundly qualified and tenacious faculty. Department is covered under star college scheme of Department of Biotechnology Govt. of India and received a grant of Rupees 5 Lacks (Non-Recurring) and 3 Lacks (Recurring) for the year 2018-19 under DBT Star College Scheme, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. Faculty members are highly engaged in research and having research publications in reputed national and international journals. Department is pursuing research in different thrust areas such as Phytochemical evaluation, Isolation of Aromatic compounds, Molecular genetics, Plant Cytogenetics and Angiosperm Taxonomy.
To promote research among Postgraduate students, a choice-based dissertation is being allotted to a maximum of 5 students on a merit cum choice basis. The duration of this dissertation is one year i.e. in the 3rd and 4th semesters. Similarly, Compulsory dissertation/project work is allotted to undergraduate students of B.Sc. (Hons.) Botany and B.Sc. Medical in 6th semester. The department encourages the students to get engaged in research activities and even present their research work in various seminars and conferences and get their work published in reputed journals.
